Freedom isn’t free.
Each morning, I wake up with the belief that I’m free to do whatever, whenever, and however I choose. Yet, there’s an absurdity that shadows this freedom: the things I don’t want to do come easily, while the things I truly want—those true to my values—feel so much harder. This creates an invisible prison, one that restricts me despite the illusion of freedom. Now I understand what Paul meant in Romans 7.
The Illusion of Freedom 🕊️
Freedom is often celebrated as the ultimate state of being—the ability to choose our path, make our decisions, and live life on our terms. But freedom, as we come to realize, is not without its absurdities.
The tension lies between what we can do and what we should do. It’s easy to fall into habits, distractions, or temptations, while pursuing our true goals and desires often feels like an uphill climb.
Paul articulates this universal struggle: knowing what is right yet finding it difficult to follow through. His words resonate deeply, reflecting the inner battle between our willpower and our intentions. Freedom, it seems, is not just the absence of constraints but the presence of these internal conflicts that define the human experience.
The Invisible Prison đź§
This paradox builds an invisible prison—not of bars and walls, but of fears, doubts, and conflicting desires. It’s a mental space where we are both the jailer and the captive.
The things we truly want—the pursuits that reflect our values and lead to growth—demand effort, discipline, and courage. Yet these same pursuits are often met with resistance: procrastination, self-doubt, or fear of failure. Are we truly free if we struggle to act on what matters most?
Breaking Free 🔓
The first step to breaking free is understanding the paradox. True freedom is not just about having endless choices; it’s about the strength to choose wisely. This shift in perspective helps us align our actions with our values and move toward the life we want to live.
Cultivating self-awareness is key:
Reflect on your triggers and distractions.
Develop habits that reinforce discipline.
Learn to embrace discomfort as part of growth.
Paul’s reflections remind us that this struggle is timeless, part of what makes us human. Acknowledging this reality is not a sign of failure—it’s a step toward the freedom that comes from living authentically.
Conclusion 🌅
Freedom is more than the absence of constraints—it’s the courage to confront the internal struggles that limit us. The paradox of freedom reveals how our choices can either liberate or confine us. But by understanding this dynamic and choosing to act in alignment with our true selves, we can break free from the invisible prisons that hold us back.
True freedom lies not in choosing what is easy but in summoning the strength to choose what is right, even when it’s hard.
